About NAIC

The National Aging Information Center (NAIC), a service of the Administration on Aging (AoA), is the central source for a wide variety of program- and policy-related materials and demographic and other statistical data on the health, economic, and social status of older Americans. Established under the Older Americans Act, NAIC opened in September 1995. Most of NAIC's services are free of charge:

Inquiry Response - NAIC information specialists provide responses to users' information inquiries by searching Center databases, consulting statistical tables, providing copies of publications and materials, and making referrals to other sources.

Repository of AoA-Funded Research Products - NAIC collects and makes available products of Title IV projects, AoA publications, and other user-oriented materials.

Computerized Literature Retrieval System - NAIC maintains a bibliographic database that may be searched online by direct dial, and through the World Wide Web. The database cites Title IV products and other aging-related materials.

Reading Room and Reference Collection - Open to the public, the NAIC reading room houses the repository of AoA-funded research products, a reference collection, and a range of periodicals. Reference librarians are available to assist patrons with their information needs.

Materials Development - NAIC develops special reports on key aging issues, statistical reports and data tables, compendium of Title IV products, and a newsletter for dissemination to the aging community.

Statistical Access and Analysis - Through its Database Reference System, NAIC provides computer access to a database that allows users to search across statistical data files for specific data sets and variables. NAIC also makes available statistics extracted from U.S. census data and other major national surveys. In addition, data from Federal agencies on the health, social, and economic status of older Americans are available.

National Aging Program Information System (NAPIS) - NAPIS, a new AoA reporting system, gathers data on services provided under the Older Americans Act. NAIC provides training and technical assistance to State and Area Agencies on Aging staff, tribal organizations, and others participating in NAPIS. NAIC disseminates statistical data from program performance reports and also holds regional and national forums on NAPIS-related issues for those participating in the system.

Electronic Dissemination Service - This system is configured for dissemination of NAIC's information through a broad range of media including:

World Wide Web Server - The service can be accessed over the Internet using most common Web browsers. Point your browser to the Uniform Resource Locator http://www.ageinfo.org/.

FAX-Back - Users with a facsimile machine can retrieve certain NAIC publications from our automated fax attendant. The FAX-Back system can be accessed by dialing (202) 554-5800. The service is accessible 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

Dial-in Bulletin Board - For computer users without Internet access, this service can be reached as a bulletin board service with a modem. Call the NAIC offices for information about connecting to the service. The bulletin board supports dial-in speeds from 2,400 to 28,800 baud, 8 bits, no parity, 1 stop-bit (8/N/1).
